Level One Class Graduates in Vancouver!
I had privilege to work with these fine instructors on my team this past weekend to teach Level 1 Dry Needling in Vancouver, BC. This is a great group of PT's who are a genuine pleasure to work worth. Thanks to Karly Foster and Aaron Vani and congrats to the graduating class!
We talked about many different aspects of needling . . .

Precision
The importance of anatomical localization: The Scalenes
When needling, whether it be dry kneeling or acupuncture, precision is key (1, 2). It is often said that "if you don't know where your needle is, you probably shouldn't be there". This is very true and in areas like the apex of the lung field, especially prudent.

Ahh, yes... The Trapezius
We all know that needling the trapezius can be a great thing, especially with the typical "J" referral pattern working so well for headache and neck pain.
We also know there is much literature to be found regarding its efficacy for: mechanical neck pain (1,2), myofascial pain (2-4), range of motion (5), local blood flow (6), . . .

One way of Needling the Trapezius
Don't forget about or neglect to use dry needling, as it is a great modality and has been shown, in sone studies, to be as effective as deep dry needling (1-3)!

E Stim and Needling
While flying over the snow capped mountains of Montana, on my way home from teaching a level 1 dry needling course in Vancouver, BC , I saw lots of folks siting, neck flexed forward in a kyphotic posture, watching movies on their iphones and ipads, or playing a game. It made me think of posture and correct my own while writing this piece. We . . .

Counting and Layers
Know where your needle is!
I often say when I am teaching “If you don’t know where your needle is, it probably shouldn’t be there” and “ Know your anatomy!”.
An easy place to get lost at times is in the posterior cervical muscles or anterior compartments of the lower leg and arms. In addition to using an app like . . .
